Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Lemosho Glades to Big Tree Camp

  • Altitude: 1,980m (6,496ft) to 2,780m (9,121ft)
  • Walking Hours: 3-4 hours
  • Description: The trek starts at Lemosho Glades, passing through rainforest, where you might spot some wildlife. You’ll ascend gradually to Big Tree Camp, your first campsite.

Day 2: Big Tree Camp to Shira 1 Camp

  • Altitude: 2,780m (9,121ft) to 3,505m (11,499ft)
  • Walking Hours: 5-7 hours
  • Description: Today, the trail continues through the rainforest and eventually emerges into heath and moorland zones. You’ll gain altitude steadily as you head towards Shira 1 Camp.

Day 3: Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp

  • Altitude: 3,505m (11,499ft) to 3,810m (12,500ft)
  • Walking Hours: 4-6 hours
  • Description: The trek crosses the Shira Plateau, offering stunning views of the surrounding landscape. The terrain becomes increasingly rocky as you approach Shira 2 Camp.

Day 4: Shira 2 Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower

  • Altitude: 3,810m (12,500ft) to 3,995m (13,106ft) (Lava Tower) to 3,960m (12,992ft) (Barranco Camp)
  • Walking Hours: 6-8 hours
  • Description: Today involves a significant altitude gain as you ascend to Lava Tower at 4,630m (15,190ft) before descending to Barranco Camp. This helps with acclimatization.

Day 5: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

  • Altitude: 3,960m (12,992ft) to 4,035m (13,238ft)
  • Walking Hours: 4-5 hours
  • Description: The day starts with the famous Barranco Wall, a challenging climb that rewards you with breathtaking views. After crossing the wall, the trail levels out as you head towards Karanga Camp.

Day 6: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

  • Altitude: 4,035m (13,238ft) to 4,675m (15,331ft)
  • Walking Hours: 3-4 hours
  • Description: Today’s trek is relatively short but steep as you ascend to Barafu Camp, your base for the summit attempt. Take the afternoon to rest and prepare for the summit push.

Day 7: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak (summit) and descent to Mweka Camp

  • Altitude: 4,675m (15,331ft) to 5,895m (19,341ft) (Uhuru Peak) to 3,100m (10,171ft) (Mweka Camp)
  • Walking Hours: 7-8 hours to summit, 4-6 hours descent
  • Description: The summit attempt begins in the early hours of the morning, aiming to reach Uhuru Peak for sunrise. After celebrating your achievement, you’ll descend back to Barafu Camp for a short rest before continuing down to Mweka Camp.

Day 8: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

  • Altitude: 3,100m (10,171ft) to 1,640m (5,381ft)
  • Walking Hours: 3-4 hours
  • Description: The final day involves a descent through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you’ll sign out with the park authorities and receive your summit certificates before transferring back to your accommodation.
