9 Days Machame Route – Kilimanjaro Trek

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp

  • Altitude: From 1,800 meters (5,905 feet) to 3,010 meters (9,875 feet)
  • Walking Hours: 5-7 hours
  • Description: The trek starts at Machame Gate where you register and begin the ascent through dense rainforest.

Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp

  • Altitude: From 3,010 meters (9,875 feet) to 3,840 meters (12,600 feet)
  • Walking Hours: 4-6 hours
  • Description: The trail continues through the forest, gradually gaining altitude. You’ll emerge from the forest into moorland and eventually reach Shira Camp.

Day 3: Shira Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp

  • Altitude: From 3,840 meters (12,600 feet) to 4,600 meters (15,100 feet) (Lava Tower) then descent to 3,950 meters (12,960 feet) (Barranco Camp)
  • Walking Hours: 7-9 hours
  • Description: You’ll climb up to Lava Tower for acclimatization and then descend to Barranco Camp via the Barranco Wall.

Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

  • Altitude: From 3,950 meters (12,960 feet) to 4,035 meters (13,235 feet)
  • Walking Hours: 3-4 hours
  • Description: The trail continues through the alpine desert with spectacular views of the surrounding landscape.

Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

  • Altitude: From 4,035 meters (13,235 feet) to 4,673 meters (15,331 feet)
  • Walking Hours: 4-5 hours
  • Description: You’ll ascend to Barafu Camp, the final camp before the summit push. This day is relatively short to allow for rest before the summit attempt.

Day 6: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak (Summit) to Mweka Camp

  • Altitude: From 4,673 meters (15,331 feet) to 5,895 meters (19,341 feet) then descent to 3,100 meters (10,170 feet)
  • Walking Hours: 11-14 hours
  • Description: The longest and most challenging day. You’ll start in the middle of the night for the summit attempt, reaching Uhuru Peak (the highest point in Africa). Then, descend to Mweka Camp.

Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

  • Altitude: From 3,100 meters (10,170 feet) to 1,650 meters (5,413 feet)
  • Walking Hours: 3-4 hours
  • Description: The final descent through the rainforest. You’ll receive your summit certificates at Mweka Gate, marking the end of the trek.

Day 8: Reserve Day

  • This day can serve as a reserve day in case of any delays due to weather or other factors. It can also be used for relaxation or exploration around the area.

Day 9: Departure

  • Depart from Kilimanjaro International Airport or continue your journey if you have further plans in Tanzania.
